HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Congress passed this Act in 1996 to protect the security and confidentiality of electronic health information. Among other things, HIPAA requires healthcare organizations to completely rethink the manner in which they protect the security and privacy of patients.
